▼ What is the Swallow Pot?
A tetsubin designed in the 1980s.
Besides boiling water, it comes with a tea strainer, so it can also be used as a teapot.
The interior is finished by kiln firing, a step essential to a proper tetsubin, making it ideal not only for boiling water but also for supplementing your iron intake.
Thanks to your support, it became a Good Design Award 2021 winner.
We are sincerely grateful for everyone's encouragement.
This tetsubin was designed in the late Showa era by Akira Kikuchi, second son of the sixth-generation head, out of a wish to change the image of Nambu ironware and to have many more people sense the possibilities of the tetsubin and pick one up.
When it was first developed, Akira's wife looked at the kettle and said it looked like a swallow, and so it was named the Swallow Pot.
When this tetsubin was released, traditional styles still dominated Nambu ironware,
and it struggled to win acceptance from customers, so it was discontinued.
More than thirty years later, thinking that it might finally be appreciated now that lifestyles have changed, we introduced the Swallow Pot on Twitter in 2020. It drew an enormous response as a timeless masterpiece, and we brought it back into production.
<Wooden Knob>
After all these years, the revival not only reproduces the original but also upgrades it.
The knob is finished with wiped lacquer (fuki-urushi) by the Marusan Shikki workshop, makers of Hidehira-nuri lacquerware, one of Iwate Prefecture's signature traditional crafts.
Normally a tetsubin's knob is cast in one piece with the lid and becomes hot, but by using a wooden knob we have made it less likely to burn your fingers. Lacquer is also highly water-resistant.
* Please note that the knob may crack from dry heating or with age. If it cracks, a replacement is available.

* Because the knobs are finished by hand, their color may differ from the sample photo.
